eBay picture requirements checker

eBay has a hard floor of 500 pixels on each side, recommends about 1600 pixels, allows files up to 12 MB, and says a neutral background works best for most items. This page measures your photo against all of that, plus how much of the frame the garment fills. The image is read in your browser with canvas and never sent anywhere.

Check against

The image is read in your browser with canvas. It is never uploaded, and no account is needed.

The technical rules are the easy part

eBay is the most forgiving marketplace on this site for file specifications. Five hundred pixels on each side is a floor almost any phone clears, twelve megabytes is a ceiling almost nobody reaches, and the accepted format list runs from JPEG through to HEIC and AVIF. If a photo fails here it is usually a thumbnail someone saved from a chat app, not a real product shot.

The recommendation that matters is 1600 pixels. Below roughly that size the zoom view stops being useful, and for clothing the zoom view is where a buyer decides whether the knit is what they think it is.

Square or 16:9 is what eBay says works best across its placements. It is a recommendation rather than a rule, so this checker flags it as something to look at rather than a failure.

The images policy is where listings actually get hurt

No watermarks, no badges, no logos, no copyright text, no contact details and no links inside the picture. eBay states that images breaking this may affect where a listing places in search, which makes it a ranking rule rather than only a content rule.

This is a common habit among resellers who cross-post the same photo set to several marketplaces and stamp a shop name in the corner so images are harder to steal. It works against you on eBay. Keep a clean set for eBay and watermark elsewhere if you must.

A neutral background is the other half of the same idea. eBay says white usually works best, with darker backgrounds for reflective goods, and that is a merchandising recommendation rather than a hard requirement. The checker reports background whiteness as a recommendation on this page for exactly that reason.

Twenty-four slots is more than most sellers use

A clothing listing on eBay can carry twenty-four pictures. Almost nobody uses them, and for used or vintage clothing that is a mistake, because the questions a buyer would otherwise ask in messages are exactly the ones extra photos answer: the label, the care tag, the fabric close up, the inside seams, the measurement tape across the chest, and honest shots of every flaw.

Flaw photos are not a risk, they are the cheapest return insurance there is. A buyer who saw the mark before buying does not open a not-as-described case about it.

The pattern that works is a clean on-white shot first, so the garment reads instantly in a crowded search grid, then detail and condition shots after it. This checker measures the first one for you. The rest only need to be in focus, correctly lit and free of anything eBay’s images policy bans.

What eBay publishes, with sources

Rules a single image cannot show

What eBay does not publish

  • eBay does not publish a required fill ratio for the product inside the frame. This checker still reports the number, because a garment that fills a fifth of the frame looks the same on eBay as it does anywhere else.

How it works

  1. 1
    Choose the marketplace

Pick Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, TikTok Shop or Poshmark. The rule list under the picker changes to that marketplace’s published requirements, each with its source.

  2. 2
    Choose an image

Select a photo from your computer or phone. It is decoded in the page with canvas and read there. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no upload wait and nothing stored.

  3. 3
Read the result and copy it

Each rule comes back as passed, to check, or failed, with the number we measured, how to fix it, and the official page the rule came from. Use the copy button to paste the whole report to whoever edits your photos.

Questions

What size do eBay pictures have to be?
At least 500 pixels on each side. eBay recommends about 1600 × 1600 and allows files up to 12 MB.
Does eBay require a white background?
No, but it says a neutral background is generally best and that white usually works for most items. This checker reports the background as a recommendation rather than a hard fail.
Which file formats does eBay accept?
JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF.
Can I put my shop logo in the corner of an eBay photo?
No. eBay’s images policy rules out watermarks, badges, logos and copyright text and says they may affect search placement.
How many pictures can one eBay listing have?
Up to 24.
