What size should Etsy clothing photos be?
Etsy publishes fewer image rules than Amazon does, and the ones it publishes are about pixels and orientation rather than about what is in the frame. That makes them easy to satisfy and easy to get wrong in one specific place: the first photo, which is cropped three different ways before a buyer ever sees it.
Quick answer
Aim for at least 2000 pixels on both sides. The first image must be at least 635 pixels wide or ranking suffers, and it should be landscape or square. Files over 1 MB may fail to upload, so export as sRGB JPEG rather than a large PNG.
What are Etsy’s published image requirements?
These are the figures from Etsy’s own help pages on image requirements and editing listing photos, as collected in our platform specs guide and checked on 2026-09-17. Etsy revises its help centre without notice, so treat the upload screen in your shop manager as the final word. Note what is absent as much as what is present: Etsy states nothing about background colour and nothing about whether a person has to be in the picture, so those are your decisions rather than requirements.
| Rule | What Etsy asks for |
|---|---|
| Minimum size | At least 2000 pixels on both sides |
| First image | At least 635 pixels wide, or search ranking suffers |
| First image orientation | Landscape or square |
| File size | Files over 1 MB may fail to upload |
| Colour profile | Convert to sRGB before uploading |
| Transparency | Transparent areas of a PNG are rendered black, so flatten first |
Why does the first photo need extra care?
Etsy crops the first image three ways, square, portrait and landscape, for different placements across the site and the app. A composition that fills the frame edge to edge will lose a sleeve in one crop and a hemline in another. Leave a margin of empty surface around the garment so that every crop still contains the whole piece, and keep anything important away from the corners. Shooting landscape or square gives the cropper the most room to work with, which is why the orientation advice exists at all.
What should the photos themselves show?
Size is the thing buyers cannot work out on their own. Baymard Institute’s product page research found that 42% of users try to gauge the overall scale and size of a product from its images, and that 28% of sites do not provide a single image that gives that reference. Their fix is to put a human or an object of known size in the frame. For clothing that means at least one photo of the piece being worn, alongside the flat lay that shows the print honestly and a graphic with the actual measurements.
How do I hit 2000 pixels without a good camera?
A modern phone already clears 2000 pixels; the problem is usually that the photo is soft or badly lit rather than small. If you are generating listing images, choose the ratio before you generate, pick a square or 4:5 frame for the first image so it survives Etsy’s crops, and export at 2K, which clears the 2000 pixel floor on both sides. Then check the file size, because a large PNG can sail past 1 MB. Exporting as JPEG in sRGB keeps you inside both limits at once.
